Photo of the Month - August
August 28, 2018Cover Girl - Crystal clear water sparkles in the sunlight while the waves send a playful, splashing invitation to join them out at sea. A mild breeze ruffles the orange canvas umbrellas waiting for company along the wooden beach deck. It’s the perfect place to dip in and cool off from the hot humid air. The white sand beaches of Roatan, Honduras offer a true tropical paradise.
This photograph was taken right before a party for my cousin’s wedding back in 2013. When I look at it, I think that it should be the cover of a travel magazine to promote the “Top 10 Beach Getaways for 2018!” and the “Discover Central America - the insider’s review.” It’s an inviting piece that is full of anticipation for a fun summer day.
This location is from one of the private beaches on Roatan that you can book, complete with a floating cabana restaurant and bar, access to kayaking, snorkeling, and an exotic animal zoo. My family had a blast wading through the shallow water and drinking under the small watery cabanas. One of the cabanas was elevated 15 feet above the deeper swimming area so the kids enthusiastically ventured to take turns jumping off into the water. Meanwhile, our mamas, papas, and abuelas watched with amusement! My family partied well into the night here, making it a memorable reception for my cousin and her new husband.
Roatan, Honduras is a tourist hotspot so if you get the chance to visit, I would also encourage everyone to explore the mainland beyond. Honduras is a poor country that has experienced a lot of strife, especially this year in 2018. The government is highly corrupt and the cartels are inviting violence to the cities, but I am optimistic that things will improve. I’ve met beautiful and caring people here and the scenery can’t be beat! I’m proud that my family is from there and I plan to visit again as soon as possible!
