Featured Inspirations - Katheryn Krouse

Nine years ago in college I met Kansas City painter, Katheryn Krouse. It was during that time, Katheryn developed a rare eye disease called Stargardt. This causes progressive damage to an area of her retina that is responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. She describes it to me as seeing the world in ultra-high contrast and, despite this handicap, she has persevered towards her goal of becoming a professional Painter.

After graduation, Katheryn began painting full-time and every year she frequents numerous art shows throughout the mid-west. She has been featured in local newspapers and charity events which has granted her ongoing commissions that keep her busy when she is not attending art festivals. She found a niche market in the proud people of the mid-west, who enjoy seeing vivid paintings of their favorite local hangout spots in their home cities. Her landscapes pop through her texture, color pallet, and unique perspective. Many of her pieces feature pools of water and reflective surfaces where the light and colors amalgamate. She captures how she sees the world, translating it beautifully to canvas.

Through trial and error, Katheryn has become a successful painter. Those trials and errors have manifested in ways such as Katheryn building her first art show booth and having her trailer break down (more than once) on the road before a festival. She shared these experiences with me by explaining the festival application process, types of show booths, how long it takes to set up and tear down the booth, and the politics involved behind the scenes of the art community. Not to mention, I’ve learned that the standard work hours for a painter always seem to involve at least three caffeinated days without sleep right before an art show. Somehow, the work always gets done…

Almost every phone call that Katheryn and I have together involves her encouraging me to pursue a First Fridays or a RAWartist showcase. She wants to see me succeed! In my hopes of becoming a notable photographer, I have thought about the different ways to achieve this goal. Katheryn’s path through the summer art festivals has been an inspiration. She’s planted the idea of a gallery showing which I hope to prepare for soon.

I am thankful for having Katheryn in my life. Her support gives me strength to continue my pursuit of selling my work.
